Medicine overview

ValeSt 2 Tablet contains 2 mg of estradiol, an estrogen hormone, in an oral tablet. Estradiol is chemically equivalent to the main estrogen produced by the ovaries before menopause. It is used as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) when estrogen levels are low, including for troublesome menopausal symptoms. Oral estradiol can also be prescribed for estrogen deficiency and, in selected postmenopausal patients, prevention of osteoporosis. Treatment requires medical supervision because systemic estrogen has important clotting, cardiovascular and cancer-related risks.

What it is used for

Estradiol tablets are used to relieve moderate to severe hot flushes and other vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. They can also treat moderate to severe vulvar and vaginal symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency and hypoestrogenism associated with conditions such as hypogonadism or primary ovarian failure. Estradiol may be considered for prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis when the patient is at significant risk and non-estrogen treatments are not appropriate. Certain specialist palliative cancer indications also exist.

How it works

Estradiol replaces estrogen when the body's natural estrogen production has fallen or is inadequate. Estrogen receptors are present in tissues throughout the body, including the reproductive tract, breasts, bones and areas involved in temperature regulation. By activating these receptors, estradiol helps reduce symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency, including menopausal hot flushes and genital symptoms. Its effects on bone also reduce the accelerated bone loss that can occur after menopause.

How it is taken

ValeSt 2 Tablet is taken by mouth. Swallow the tablet with water and follow the schedule prescribed by the healthcare professional. Oral estradiol can generally be taken with or without food. The appropriate regimen depends on the reason for treatment and individual clinical factors, so the prescribed dose or schedule should not be changed without medical advice. Systemic estrogen therapy should be reviewed periodically to determine whether continued treatment is needed.

Important warnings

Do not use systemic estradiol in pregnancy or in people with unexplained abnormal genital bleeding, known or suspected estrogen-dependent cancer, active or previous deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, recent or active arterial thromboembolic disease such as stroke or myocardial infarction, significant liver disease, or hypersensitivity to the product's ingredients. Estrogen therapy can increase the risk of venous blood clots, stroke and other cardiovascular events. Estrogen used without adequate progestogen in a person with an intact uterus increases the risk of endometrial cancer; a clinician should determine whether progestogen is needed. Breast and ovarian cancer risks also require consideration during long-term therapy. Tell the prescriber about migraine, hypertension, diabetes, high triglycerides, gallbladder disease, endometriosis, fibroids, lupus, thyroid disease, seizures and planned surgery or prolonged immobilization. Medicines that induce or inhibit CYP3A4, including rifampin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, St John's wort, some macrolide antibiotics, azole antifungals and ritonavir, may alter estrogen exposure. Seek urgent medical attention for sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, painful or swollen leg, sudden severe headache, new speech or vision problems, weakness or numbness, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Unexplained or persistent vaginal bleeding requires prompt medical assessment.

Side effects and monitoring

Common effects of systemic estrogen can include headache, breast pain or tenderness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, fluid retention and vaginal bleeding or spotting. Less common but serious problems include deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, myocardial infarction, gallbladder disease, significant increases in triglycerides, liver problems and estrogen-sensitive cancers. New breast lumps, jaundice, unusual vaginal bleeding or symptoms suggesting a blood clot require medical assessment. Patients using systemic estrogen should have treatment reviewed periodically, with appropriate breast, gynecological and other clinical monitoring based on age and individual risk factors.

Pregnancy

Estradiol tablets should not be used during pregnancy. They have no indication for use during pregnancy. Contact the prescribing clinician if pregnancy occurs or is suspected during treatment.

Breastfeeding

Estrogens can pass into human milk and may reduce the quantity and quality of breast milk. Estradiol use while breastfeeding therefore requires assessment by a healthcare professional.

Food, drink and interactions

Alcohol is not specifically prohibited with estrogen HRT. However, reducing alcohol intake may help lessen menopausal flushing and sleep problems, and alcohol consumption is relevant when considering overall breast-cancer and cardiovascular risk.

Food and drink

Estradiol tablets may generally be taken with or without food. Grapefruit or grapefruit juice can inhibit CYP3A4 and may increase estrogen concentrations, potentially increasing adverse effects; discuss regular grapefruit consumption with the prescriber or pharmacist.

Storage

Store below 25°C. Keep the tablets protected from inappropriate heat and moisture and out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

How long does oral estradiol take to help menopause symptoms?

The response varies between patients and symptoms. Take estradiol consistently as prescribed and discuss persistent or worsening symptoms with the prescriber rather than changing the dose yourself.

Do I need progesterone with estradiol tablets?

It may be needed if you still have a uterus. Adding an appropriate progestogen can reduce the increased risk of endometrial cancer associated with systemic estrogen used alone; the prescriber should determine the appropriate regimen.

Can I take ValeSt 2 Tablet with food?

Yes. Oral estradiol can generally be taken with or without food. Taking it consistently according to the prescribed schedule is more important than taking it with a particular meal.

What should I do if I have unexpected bleeding while taking estradiol?

Contact your healthcare professional, particularly if bleeding is persistent, recurring or occurs after menopause. Unexplained vaginal bleeding needs assessment because systemic estrogen can affect the lining of the uterus.

Does estradiol increase the risk of blood clots?

Systemic estrogen therapy is associated with an increased risk of venous blood clots. Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, or pain and swelling in a leg requires urgent medical attention.

Can I drink alcohol while taking estradiol?

Alcohol is not specifically prohibited with estrogen HRT. Limiting alcohol may nevertheless help with hot flushes and sleep and may be appropriate when considering the broader health risks associated with HRT.

Can I eat grapefruit while taking estradiol tablets?

Grapefruit juice can inhibit CYP3A4, an enzyme involved in estrogen metabolism, and may increase estrogen exposure. Discuss regular grapefruit consumption with your doctor or pharmacist.

Can Cheap Generic Med ship ValeSt 2 Tablet internationally?

Cheap Generic Med serves multiple international destinations, but availability for this specific product and destination is NOT VERIFIED. Shipping availability also does not establish whether personal import of a prescription medicine is permitted in the destination country.
