Medicine overview
Esserm 60 mg Tablet contains raloxifene hydrochloride, a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). The product has been documented as a 60 mg raloxifene hydrochloride tablet manufactured by Torrent Laboratories Ltd. Raloxifene is used in postmenopausal women to prevent or treat osteoporosis and, in appropriate patients, to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer. It acts like estrogen in some tissues, including bone, while blocking estrogen activity in breast tissue.
What it is used for
Raloxifene is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis after menopause by helping maintain bone density and reduce bone loss. It is also used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and in postmenopausal women considered at high risk of invasive breast cancer. It does not treat existing invasive breast cancer and is not indicated to prevent breast-cancer recurrence or noninvasive breast cancer.
How it works
Raloxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, or SERM. Its effects differ between tissues. In bone, it produces estrogen-like effects that decrease bone breakdown and help preserve bone density after menopause. In breast tissue, raloxifene blocks some estrogen effects. Because certain breast cancers depend on estrogen signaling for growth, this action can reduce the risk of developing invasive breast cancer in appropriately selected postmenopausal women.
How it is taken
Raloxifene tablets are taken by mouth. The verified raloxifene 60 mg prescribing information specifies one tablet once daily, which may be taken at any time of day with or without food. Take the medicine as prescribed and at about the same time each day. Do not take more or less than prescribed or stop treatment without discussing it with the prescriber. Calcium and vitamin D intake should be addressed when dietary intake is inadequate.
Important warnings
Raloxifene increases the risk of venous thromboembolism, including deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and must not be used in women with an active or previous venous thromboembolism, including retinal vein thrombosis. An increased risk of death from stroke was observed in postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease or increased coronary risk. Prolonged immobility further increases clot risk; treatment should be stopped at least 72 hours before and during prolonged immobilization according to prescribing guidance. Seek urgent medical attention for unexplained leg swelling or pain, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, or sudden visual changes. Cholestyramine and other anion-exchange resins substantially reduce raloxifene absorption. Raloxifene is not intended for premenopausal women and should not be used during pregnancy.
Side effects and monitoring
Common effects include hot flashes, leg cramps, peripheral swelling, flu-like symptoms, joint pain, and sweating. The most important serious adverse effects are venous blood clots, including deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; sudden visual changes can also indicate retinal vein thrombosis. Urgent medical assessment is needed for symptoms of a blood clot or stroke. Women using raloxifene for breast-cancer risk reduction should continue appropriate breast examinations and mammography, and unexpected vaginal bleeding should be medically evaluated.
Pregnancy
Raloxifene is contraindicated during pregnancy and in women who may become pregnant. It may cause fetal harm. If pregnancy occurs during treatment, medical advice should be obtained promptly.
Breastfeeding
Raloxifene should not be used during breastfeeding. It is not known whether raloxifene or its metabolites are excreted in human milk, and a risk to the nursing infant cannot be excluded.
Food, drink and interactions
No specific direct raloxifene–alcohol interaction is established in the cited prescribing information. However, excessive alcohol intake is discouraged in people being treated for osteoporosis because it can adversely affect bone health and increase fall risk.
Food and drink
Raloxifene can be taken with or without food. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is important during osteoporosis treatment, and supplementation may be recommended when dietary intake is insufficient.
Storage
Store raloxifene at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture, and keep it in its original container tightly closed and out of reach of children. Product-specific Esserm storage conditions were not independently verified.
Frequently asked questions
Will raloxifene help strengthen my bones after menopause?
Yes. Raloxifene has estrogen-like effects on bone that reduce bone loss and help maintain bone density in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
Are hot flashes normal when taking raloxifene?
Hot flashes are a recognized common side effect and may be more noticeable during the first months of treatment. Speak with your healthcare professional if they become troublesome or persistent.
Does raloxifene cause blood clots?
Raloxifene increases the risk of blood clots in the veins. Seek urgent medical attention for unexplained leg swelling or pain, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, or sudden changes in vision.
Can raloxifene prevent breast cancer?
It can reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in certain postmenopausal women, including women with osteoporosis or those at high risk. It does not treat existing breast cancer and is not approved to prevent recurrence of invasive breast cancer.
Can I take Esserm with food?
Yes. Raloxifene 60 mg may be taken with or without food.
What should I do if I will be immobile or having surgery?
Tell the healthcare professional managing your raloxifene treatment. Prolonged immobility increases blood-clot risk, and prescribing guidance calls for raloxifene to be stopped at least 72 hours before and during prolonged immobilization.
Can Cheap Generic Med ship Esserm to the United States?
Cheap Generic Med serves the United States under its international shipping model. Delivery is typically estimated at 10–14 business days after dispatch, although customs or carrier delays may extend transit; prescription and import requirements may also apply.
