Medicine overview

Osteomet Injection is a 4 mg zoledronic acid medicine manufactured by Neon Laboratories Ltd. Zoledronic acid belongs to the bisphosphonate class, which reduces excessive breakdown of bone. The 4 mg intravenous formulation is used in oncology for hypercalcemia of malignancy, meaning dangerously high blood calcium caused by cancer, and for patients with multiple myeloma or cancer that has spread to bone. It is administered by intravenous infusion under medical supervision.

What it is used for

Osteomet 4 mg Injection is used for conditions associated with cancer and abnormal bone breakdown. Zoledronic acid 4 mg is indicated for hypercalcemia of malignancy. It is also used with standard cancer treatment in patients with multiple myeloma and in patients with documented bone metastases from solid tumors to reduce skeletal complications. This 4 mg oncology formulation should not be treated as interchangeable with 5 mg zoledronic acid products used for osteoporosis.

How it works

Zoledronic acid is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate with a strong affinity for mineralized bone. It inhibits osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue. Reducing osteoclast activity slows excessive bone resorption and decreases the release of calcium from bone into the bloodstream. This action helps control cancer-related hypercalcemia and reduces skeletal complications associated with multiple myeloma and bone metastases.

How it is taken

Osteomet is given by intravenous infusion by a healthcare professional. Zoledronic acid 4 mg must not be administered as a rapid intravenous injection; prescribing information for the 4 mg oncology formulation specifies an infusion lasting at least 15 minutes. Kidney function and serum creatinine should be assessed before treatment, and patients should be appropriately hydrated. Dose selection and repeat-treatment intervals depend on the indication and renal function and must be determined by the treating clinician.

Important warnings

Zoledronic acid can cause clinically significant kidney injury, particularly with pre-existing renal impairment, dehydration, rapid infusion, or other nephrotoxic medicines. Renal function should be checked before treatment. Correct hypocalcemia and other mineral-metabolism disturbances before administration and provide calcium/vitamin D supplementation when clinically indicated. Osteonecrosis of the jaw has occurred, particularly in patients receiving cancer treatment; an oral examination and appropriate preventive dental care are recommended before treatment. Avoid invasive dental procedures where possible during therapy. Severe bone, joint, or muscle pain and atypical femoral fractures have been reported. Seek medical assessment for new thigh or groin pain. Serious hypersensitivity reactions can occur. Concomitant aminoglycosides, loop diuretics, nephrotoxic medicines, and other drugs that affect calcium or kidney function require particular caution. Do not use another zoledronic acid or bisphosphonate product concurrently unless specifically directed by the treating clinician.

Side effects and monitoring

Common effects can include fever, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, headache, nausea, vomiting, anemia, bone pain, muscle or joint pain, and changes in calcium or other electrolytes. Serious or less common problems include acute kidney injury, severe hypocalcemia, osteonecrosis of the jaw, serious allergic reactions, severe musculoskeletal pain, and atypical femoral fractures. Medical attention is needed for reduced urination, severe weakness or muscle spasms, breathing or swallowing difficulty, facial swelling, persistent jaw pain or non-healing mouth lesions, or new unexplained thigh or groin pain. Renal function, serum calcium, and other relevant electrolytes should be monitored as clinically appropriate.

Pregnancy

Zoledronic acid can cause fetal harm. Pregnancy status should be assessed before starting the 4 mg oncology formulation in patients who could become pregnant, and effective contraception should be discussed with the treating clinician. Zoledronic acid can remain incorporated in bone for prolonged periods, so potential fetal exposure is a consideration even after treatment has stopped.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with the 4 mg oncology formulation of zoledronic acid. It is not known whether zoledronic acid is present in human milk, and the medicine can remain bound to bone for an extended period.

Food and drink

Zoledronic acid is administered intravenously, so food does not determine its absorption. Patients should be appropriately hydrated before administration unless a medical condition requires fluid restriction. Follow the treating clinician's instructions about fluids, calcium, and vitamin D.

Frequently asked questions

Will I feel unwell after a zoledronic acid infusion?

Flu-like reactions can occur after zoledronic acid, including fever, fatigue, headache, chills, and muscle or joint pain. Contact your healthcare team if symptoms are severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

Why does my kidney function need to be checked before Osteomet?

Zoledronic acid is eliminated through the kidneys and can cause renal impairment. Serum creatinine and renal function should therefore be assessed before treatment, with additional monitoring based on clinical risk.

Do I need to drink extra water before the infusion?

Appropriate hydration is important before zoledronic acid administration, particularly because dehydration can increase kidney risk. Follow the healthcare team's fluid instructions, especially if you have heart, kidney, or other conditions that require fluid restriction.

Why does my dentist need to know that I receive zoledronic acid?

Zoledronic acid is associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw, a rare but serious condition involving damaged jawbone. Dental assessment and preventive care are recommended before treatment, and your dentist should know about zoledronic acid before invasive dental work.

How long does the Osteomet infusion take?

The authoritative prescribing information for zoledronic acid 4 mg specifies intravenous infusion over at least 15 minutes. The healthcare professional administering treatment determines the exact infusion procedure.

Can Osteomet cause low calcium?

Yes. Zoledronic acid can cause hypocalcemia, which may occasionally be severe. Calcium and other relevant minerals should be assessed and corrected when necessary, and calcium and vitamin D may be prescribed according to the clinical situation.

Is Osteomet 4 mg the same as the 5 mg zoledronic acid infusion used for osteoporosis?

No. Both contain zoledronic acid, but the strengths, indications, dosing regimens, and product formulations must not be treated as interchangeable. Osteomet has been verified as a 4 mg product from Neon Laboratories Ltd.

Can Cheap Generic Med ship Osteomet to the United States?

Cheap Generic Med serves the United States under its international shipping model. The usual estimate is 10–14 business days after dispatch, but customs or carrier delays can extend transit. Prescription and personal-import requirements may apply and shipping availability does not guarantee customs clearance or legal importation.
