Medicine overview

Osral 60 mg Tablet contains raloxifene, a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). The medicine is primarily used to prevent or treat osteoporosis after menopause, when declining estrogen levels can contribute to loss of bone strength. Raloxifene acts like estrogen in bone while blocking some estrogen effects in other tissues. It can also reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in certain postmenopausal women, but it does not treat existing breast cancer.

What it is used for

Raloxifene is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. By helping maintain bone density, it can reduce the risk of vertebral fractures. It is also approved to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have osteoporosis or are otherwise at high risk for invasive breast cancer. It should not be used as treatment for established invasive breast cancer or to prevent recurrence.

How it works

Raloxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, meaning its estrogen-like or estrogen-blocking effects vary between tissues. In bone, it acts as an estrogen agonist and reduces the increased bone resorption associated with menopause, helping preserve bone density. In breast tissue, it acts mainly as an estrogen antagonist, blocking estrogen-related stimulation. This tissue-selective action explains its role in postmenopausal osteoporosis and in reducing invasive breast cancer risk in appropriately selected women.

How it is taken

Raloxifene tablets are taken by mouth. The verified general regimen for raloxifene 60 mg is one tablet once daily, at any time of day, with or without food. Taking it at approximately the same time each day can help with consistency. Calcium and vitamin D intake should be adequate when the medicine is being used for osteoporosis; supplementation may be advised when dietary intake is insufficient. Follow the prescribing clinician's instructions and do not change treatment without medical advice.

Important warnings

Raloxifene increases the risk of venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and must not be used in women with an active or previous venous thromboembolism, including retinal vein thrombosis. Prolonged immobility further increases clot risk; prescribing information advises discontinuation at least 72 hours before and during prolonged immobilization. Seek urgent medical attention for unexplained leg swelling or pain, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, or sudden vision changes. An increased risk of death from stroke was observed in postmenopausal women with documented coronary heart disease or increased coronary risk, so individual stroke risk requires medical consideration. Raloxifene is contraindicated during pregnancy and is not recommended for premenopausal women. Use caution with hepatic or moderate-to-severe renal impairment. Cholestyramine and similar anion-exchange resins reduce raloxifene absorption and should not be co-administered; systemic estrogen therapy is not recommended. Warfarin or related anticoagulants may require closer prothrombin time/INR monitoring when raloxifene is started or stopped.

Side effects and monitoring

Common adverse effects include hot flashes, leg cramps, peripheral swelling, flu-like symptoms, joint pain, and increased sweating. The most important serious risk is venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; retinal vein occlusion and stroke have also been reported. Urgent assessment is needed for symptoms suggesting a blood clot, such as one-sided leg pain or swelling, sudden chest pain, breathing difficulty, coughing blood, or sudden visual changes. Women using raloxifene for breast-cancer risk reduction should continue appropriate breast examinations and mammography. Patients with previous estrogen-associated hypertriglyceridemia may require triglyceride monitoring, and those using warfarin may need closer coagulation monitoring.

Pregnancy

Raloxifene is contraindicated during pregnancy and is not indicated for women who may become pregnant. Its mechanism of action may interfere with estrogen functions that are important during pregnancy, and animal studies have shown adverse reproductive and developmental effects.

Breastfeeding

Raloxifene is not indicated for women of reproductive potential. It is not known whether raloxifene is present in human milk or what effects it may have on a breastfed child or milk production. Because its mechanism may interfere with estrogen functions in breast tissue during lactation, breastfeeding use requires medical assessment.

Food, drink and interactions

No specific direct alcohol interaction is established in the prescribing information. For osteoporosis management, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided because it is a modifiable factor associated with bone health.

Food and drink

Raloxifene may be taken with or without food. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is important for osteoporosis prevention or treatment; supplementation may be recommended when dietary intake is inadequate.

Storage

Store below 30°C. Protect the tablets from excessive heat and moisture and keep them out of the reach of children. The exact Osral product listing specifies storage below 30°C; general raloxifene labeling uses controlled room-temperature storage.

Frequently asked questions

Can raloxifene make hot flashes worse?

Yes. Hot flashes are a recognized side effect of raloxifene and may occur or become more noticeable after treatment begins. Raloxifene is not a treatment for menopausal hot flashes.

Does raloxifene cause blood clots?

Raloxifene increases the risk of blood clots in the veins, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It should not be used by women with a current or previous venous thromboembolism.

What should I do if I have a long flight while taking raloxifene?

Avoid remaining still for long periods. Prolonged immobility increases the risk of venous blood clots, so follow your clinician's advice about movement and any other precautions during extended travel.

Can I take raloxifene with calcium and vitamin D?

Yes. Calcium and vitamin D can be taken with raloxifene, and adequate intake is important when treating or preventing osteoporosis. Your clinician can advise whether supplementation is needed.

Can I take Osral 60 mg with food?

Yes. Raloxifene can be taken with or without food and at any time of day. Taking it at roughly the same time each day may make it easier to remember.

Is raloxifene a treatment for breast cancer?

No. Raloxifene can reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in certain postmenopausal women, but it is not approved to treat existing invasive breast cancer or prevent recurrence.

What symptoms of a blood clot need urgent medical attention?

Seek urgent medical attention for unexplained leg pain, warmth or swelling, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, or sudden changes in vision. These can be warning signs of serious thromboembolism.

Can Cheap Generic Med ship Osral to the United States?

Cheap Generic Med serves the United States under its international shipping model. Delivery is typically estimated at 10-14 business days after dispatch, but customs or carrier delays can extend transit; prescription and import requirements may also apply.
