Medicine overview

Estrahenz is an oral hormone replacement therapy tablet containing 2 mg of estradiol valerate, an ester of estradiol. The body converts estradiol valerate to estradiol, an estrogen hormone. It is intended for women with estrogen-deficiency symptoms around or after menopause and may also be used in the management of osteoporosis risk where estrogen therapy is appropriate. Treatment requires medical supervision because systemic estrogen has important contraindications and risks, including blood clots and certain hormone-sensitive cancers.

What it is used for

Estrahenz is used as hormone replacement therapy for symptoms caused by reduced estrogen production during perimenopause and after menopause. These can include vasomotor symptoms such as hot flushes and other symptoms associated with estrogen deficiency. Estradiol valerate HRT may also be used to help prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis in women at significant fracture risk when other approved osteoporosis medicines are unsuitable.

How it works

Estradiol valerate is a prodrug of estradiol. After oral administration, it is converted to estradiol, which acts at estrogen receptors in estrogen-responsive tissues. This replaces some of the estrogen that declines around and after menopause. Restoring estrogen activity can reduce estrogen-deficiency symptoms and helps limit the accelerated loss of bone associated with menopause.

How it is taken

Estrahenz is taken by mouth. Follow the regimen prescribed by the healthcare professional and do not independently change the amount or duration of treatment. Oral estradiol-valerate HRT tablets are generally swallowed whole, and taking them at a consistent time each day helps maintain the prescribed regimen. Women with an intact uterus may also require a progestogen to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer; the appropriate HRT regimen must be determined by the prescriber.

Important warnings

Do not use systemic estrogen in known or suspected pregnancy, unexplained genital bleeding, known or suspected estrogen-dependent cancer, active or previous venous thromboembolism such as deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, recent or active arterial thromboembolic disease such as stroke or myocardial infarction, or significant liver disease where contraindicated. Systemic estrogen can increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia/cancer when used without adequate progestogen in a woman with a uterus and is associated with risks including venous thromboembolism, stroke and certain cancers. Seek urgent medical attention for symptoms suggesting a blood clot, stroke or heart problem, such as sudden chest pain, unexplained shortness of breath, painful leg swelling, sudden weakness or difficulty speaking. Persistent or unexpected vaginal bleeding requires medical assessment. Medicines that induce or inhibit estrogen-metabolizing enzymes can alter estrogen exposure, so other prescription medicines, nonprescription products and herbal remedies should be discussed with the prescriber.

Side effects and monitoring

Common or recognized effects of systemic estrogen therapy include breast tenderness or pain, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps or bloating, changes in vaginal bleeding or spotting, dizziness, fluid retention and changes in weight. Less common but serious risks include deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, myocardial infarction, gallbladder disease, liver problems, severe allergic reactions and estrogen-dependent malignancies. Obtain prompt medical assessment for unusual or persistent vaginal bleeding, a new breast lump, jaundice, severe headache, sudden vision or neurological changes, chest pain, breathlessness or painful swelling of a leg. HRT should be reviewed periodically to assess continuing need, benefits and risks.

Pregnancy

Estrogen HRT is not indicated during pregnancy. Estradiol treatment should not be used in known or suspected pregnancy; contact the prescriber if pregnancy occurs or is suspected.

Breastfeeding

Estrogens can pass into breast milk and may reduce the quantity and quality of milk. Use during breastfeeding requires medical assessment and is generally not appropriate for routine menopausal HRT.

Food, drink and interactions

Alcohol is not specifically prohibited with estrogen HRT. However, reducing alcohol intake may help lessen menopausal flushing and sleep problems, and individual medical circumstances may require additional restrictions.

Food and drink

Estrogen HRT can generally be taken without special dietary restrictions. Grapefruit juice can inhibit CYP3A4 and may increase systemic estrogen concentrations, so patients should check with their prescriber or pharmacist about grapefruit if it is regularly consumed.

Frequently asked questions

Is unexpected bleeding normal after starting estrogen HRT?

Spotting or bleeding can occur after starting or changing HRT, but persistent, heavy, recurrent or otherwise unexplained bleeding needs medical assessment. Postmenopausal bleeding should not simply be assumed to be a side effect.

What happens if I forget an Estrahenz tablet?

Follow the instructions supplied with your prescription rather than doubling the next dose. Guidance for oral estradiol-valerate HRT allows a forgotten tablet to be taken within a limited interval, but the exact missed-dose instructions should match your prescribed regimen.

Does Estrahenz contain estradiol or estradiol valerate?

Estrahenz contains 2 mg of estradiol valerate. Estradiol valerate is converted in the body to estradiol.

Do I need progesterone with Estrahenz?

It may be needed if you still have your uterus. Adding an appropriate progestogen to systemic estrogen HRT helps protect the uterine lining from estrogen-related hyperplasia and cancer; your prescriber determines the regimen.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Estrahenz?

Alcohol is not specifically prohibited with estrogen HRT. Cutting down may nevertheless help with menopausal flushing and sleep problems.

Can I take Estrahenz with food?

Oral estrogen HRT does not normally require special food restrictions. Take the tablet according to the product instructions and the regimen prescribed for you.

Does Estrahenz prevent pregnancy?

No. Hormone replacement therapy is not a contraceptive, so contraception may still be required when pregnancy remains possible.

Can Cheap Generic Med ship Estrahenz internationally?

Cheap Generic Med serves multiple international destinations, but availability of this specific medicine and destination-specific prescription or import requirements must be confirmed when ordering. Shipping availability does not by itself establish that personal import is permitted.
