How it is taken
Apply A Ret Gel only to the skin as directed by the prescriber. Gently wash the treatment area with a mild, non-medicated cleanser and allow the skin to dry before application. Apply a thin layer over the affected area rather than using excessive amounts. Keep the gel away from the eyes, mouth, corners of the nose, mucous membranes, sunburned skin and areas affected by eczema. Do not apply more frequently than directed, because extra product can increase irritation without clearing acne faster.
Important warnings
Do not use the product if hypersensitivity to tretinoin or another ingredient is known; discontinue it if a hypersensitivity reaction occurs. Tretinoin can cause marked redness, peeling, dryness, burning or other local irritation. Avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight, sunlamps and tanning beds, and use appropriate sun protection because treated skin may be more sensitive to ultraviolet light. Avoid applying it to sunburned or eczematous skin. Other irritating topical preparations—including certain products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, resorcinol or high concentrations of alcohol—should not be added without professional advice. Tretinoin gels containing alcohol are flammable; avoid fire, flames and smoking during application.
Side effects and monitoring
Common effects are local skin reactions such as dryness, redness, peeling, scaling, burning, stinging or irritation. Acne may temporarily worsen during the first few weeks as previously developing lesions become apparent. Severe or persistent irritation requires medical advice and may require reassessment of treatment. Stop using the product and seek medical advice if signs of hypersensitivity develop. Routine laboratory monitoring is not generally part of topical tretinoin acne treatment; clinical response and skin tolerance are monitored instead.
Pregnancy
Topical tretinoin should not be used in pregnancy without medical assessment.
