Medicine overview
Hucog HP 2000 IU Injection contains highly purified human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a gonadotropin hormone with predominantly luteinizing hormone-like activity. It is used in specific fertility and hormone-related conditions. In women, hCG can trigger ovulation after appropriate follicular stimulation. In males, it stimulates testicular cells to produce androgens and may be used in hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism, selected cases of cryptorchidism, and with menotropin to support spermatogenesis. The product is administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection under medical supervision.
What it is used for
Hucog HP is indicated for anovulatory infertility as part of a medically supervised ovulation-induction regimen after follicular maturation has been stimulated. In males, it is used for hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism and cryptorchidism. When combined with menotropin in appropriate patients, hCG can also stimulate the induction and maintenance of spermatogenesis. The indication and treatment regimen depend on clinical assessment and monitoring.
How it works
Human chorionic gonadotropin acts mainly like luteinizing hormone (LH). In women with appropriately developed ovarian follicles, this LH-like activity promotes final follicular maturation and ovulation. In males, hCG stimulates Leydig cells in the testes, increasing androgen production and supporting the development of secondary sexual characteristics. When used with menotropin in selected men with hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism, this hormonal stimulation can also support sperm production.
How it is taken
Hucog HP is given by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. It should be administered according to a clinician-directed fertility or hormonal-treatment regimen, because timing and monitoring depend on the indication and response to treatment. During ovulation induction, ovarian response should be assessed carefully, including ultrasound and/or serum estradiol monitoring when appropriate. Do not use an individualized dose or injection schedule unless it has been prescribed for the specific treatment cycle.
Important warnings
Ovulation induction with hCG can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which may become serious. Hucog HP should not be administered during an ovulation-induction cycle if monitoring shows an excessive ovarian response or abnormal ovarian enlargement. Urgent medical assessment is needed for severe or increasing abdominal pain or swelling, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, reduced urination, persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Fertility treatment can also increase the risk of multiple pregnancy, ovarian cyst rupture with internal bleeding, and arterial thromboembolism. In males, high doses can cause fluid retention or edema, and treatment in boys can cause premature sexual development. Concomitant ovulation-stimulating medicines such as menotropins or clomiphene may increase the follicular response and require close specialist monitoring.
Side effects and monitoring
Commonly reported effects include headache, irritability, restlessness, depression, fatigue, edema, gynecomastia, and injection-site pain. Serious fertility-treatment complications include OHSS, ovarian cyst rupture with hemoperitoneum, multiple pregnancy, and arterial thromboembolism. Severe OHSS may cause marked ovarian enlargement, abdominal pain or distension, rapid weight gain, breathing difficulty, reduced urine output, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea and requires prompt medical attention. Ovarian response should be monitored during ovulation-induction treatment, commonly with ultrasound and/or serum estradiol measurements.
Pregnancy
Hucog HP may be used to induce ovulation before conception as part of fertility treatment, but chorionic gonadotropin is not intended as routine treatment during an established pregnancy. Pregnancy can make OHSS more severe and prolonged after fertility treatment. Chorionic gonadotropin labeling also warns of potential fetal harm when administered during pregnancy; use during pregnancy should therefore be determined by the treating specialist.
Breastfeeding
It is not known whether chorionic gonadotropin is excreted in human milk. Use during breastfeeding requires medical assessment and caution.
Storage
Store Hucog HP vials refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Discard any unused portion.
Frequently asked questions
Does the hCG injection itself make me ovulate immediately?
It is used to trigger the final stages leading to ovulation after follicles have been appropriately stimulated, but the exact timing of treatment must be determined by the fertility specialist.
Can hCG cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome?
Yes. OHSS is an important potential complication of fertility treatment involving hCG. Seek prompt medical attention for severe abdominal pain or swelling, rapid weight gain, breathing difficulty, reduced urination, or persistent vomiting.
Why do I need scans or blood tests before an hCG trigger injection?
Monitoring helps assess the ovarian response and reduce the risk of excessive stimulation. Ultrasound and/or serum estradiol measurements may be used before hCG is given.
Can Hucog HP be used for male infertility?
It can be used in selected males with hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. When clinically appropriate, hCG with menotropin can stimulate and maintain spermatogenesis; it is not a treatment for every cause of male infertility.
Can I use Hucog HP together with other fertility medicines?
Only as part of a clinician-directed regimen. Medicines such as menotropins or clomiphene can increase the ovarian follicular response when used with hCG, so specialist monitoring is important.
What should I do if I develop severe abdominal swelling after an hCG injection?
Obtain prompt medical assessment, particularly if swelling occurs with pain, rapid weight gain, breathing difficulty, reduced urination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. These can be signs of OHSS.
Does Hucog HP need refrigeration?
Yes. Store the vial at 2°C to 8°C, protect it from light, and do not freeze it. Any unused portion should be discarded.
Can Hucog HP cause a multiple pregnancy?
Yes. Multiple pregnancy is a recognized risk when hCG is used as part of ovulation-induction treatment.
Is Hucog HP 2000 IU a prescription medicine?
Yes. The manufacturer's labeling restricts the product to use by a registered medical practitioner, hospital, or laboratory, and treatment requires medical supervision.
