Medicine overview

Efil 2.5 mg Tablet contains tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor used for erectile dysfunction in adult men. The 2.5 mg strength is suitable for a prescribed once-daily tadalafil regimen for erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil improves the normal erectile response by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It does not produce an erection without sexual stimulation and does not increase sexual desire. The medicine is taken by mouth and is prescription-only.

What it is used for

Efil 2.5 mg Tablet is used to manage erectile dysfunction, meaning difficulty getting or maintaining an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity. Tadalafil 2.5 mg is an established strength for once-daily treatment of erectile dysfunction. Although tadalafil is also used at other strengths or regimens for benign prostatic hyperplasia and pulmonary arterial hypertension, those uses should not automatically be applied to this specific 2.5 mg product and regimen.

How it works

Tadalafil blocks phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide increases cGMP in penile tissue. By slowing cGMP breakdown, tadalafil helps smooth muscle and blood vessels in the penis relax so more blood can enter. This supports the natural process needed to obtain and maintain an erection. Sexual stimulation is still necessary for the medicine to work.

How it is taken

When tadalafil 2.5 mg is prescribed for once-daily treatment of erectile dysfunction, it is taken orally at approximately the same time each day, without regard to the timing of sexual activity. It may be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet as directed by the prescriber and do not take more than one dose in a day. Do not combine tadalafil with other erectile dysfunction medicines unless specifically instructed by a healthcare professional.

Important warnings

Do not take tadalafil with nitrates such as nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate or isosorbide mononitrate, or with recreational nitrites such as “poppers”; the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. It is also contraindicated with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat. Medical assessment is important if sexual activity is unsafe because of cardiovascular disease. Tadalafil can further lower blood pressure when combined with alpha-blockers, antihypertensive medicines or substantial alcohol intake. Potent CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole or ritonavir can increase tadalafil exposure. Once-daily use is not recommended in severe renal impairment or dialysis, and caution is required with liver impairment. Do not combine tadalafil with another PDE5 inhibitor. Seek urgent medical help for an erection lasting 4 hours or longer, sudden loss of vision, sudden hearing loss, severe allergic symptoms, fainting or chest pain.

Side effects and monitoring

Common effects can include headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, nasal congestion, flushing and gastrointestinal discomfort. Less common but potentially serious reactions include marked low blood pressure, prolonged or painful erection, sudden decrease or loss of vision, sudden hearing loss, severe hypersensitivity reactions and cardiovascular symptoms. Seek urgent medical attention for an erection lasting 4 hours or more, sudden vision or hearing changes, fainting, severe chest pain or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Persistent or troublesome side effects should be medically reviewed, particularly in people taking blood-pressure medicines or with kidney, liver or cardiovascular disease.

Pregnancy

Tadalafil for erectile dysfunction is not indicated for use in women. There are insufficient human pregnancy data to establish a medicine-associated developmental risk.

Breastfeeding

Tadalafil for erectile dysfunction is not indicated for use in women. It is not known whether tadalafil or its metabolites are present in human breast milk or what effects they may have on a breastfed infant.

Food, drink and interactions

Avoid substantial alcohol consumption while taking tadalafil. Both tadalafil and alcohol can widen blood vessels, and larger amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of dizziness, headache, increased heart rate and a fall in blood pressure.

Food and drink

Tadalafil may be taken with or without food because food does not significantly affect its absorption. Grapefruit juice can inhibit CYP3A4 and may increase tadalafil exposure, so regular or substantial grapefruit consumption should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Storage

Store protected from light and moisture at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Does tadalafil 2.5 mg need to be taken only before sex?

No. The 2.5 mg strength is an established once-daily regimen for erectile dysfunction and is taken at approximately the same time each day without regard to when sexual activity occurs.

Does tadalafil 2.5 mg build up in the body when taken every day?

Yes. With once-daily tadalafil, steady-state blood levels are generally reached within about five days. Take it only according to the prescribed regimen rather than adding extra doses.

Do I still need sexual stimulation when taking Efil 2.5 mg?

Yes. Tadalafil supports the normal erectile response to sexual stimulation; it does not automatically cause an erection.

Can tadalafil 2.5 mg cause headaches or back pain?

Yes. Headache, indigestion, back pain and muscle aches are recognized tadalafil side effects. Speak with a healthcare professional if an effect is severe, persistent or difficult to tolerate.

Can I take sildenafil or another ED medicine while using tadalafil every day?

Do not combine tadalafil with sildenafil or another PDE5 inhibitor unless a healthcare professional specifically directs you to do so. The safety and effectiveness of combining these treatments have not been established, and adverse effects may increase.

Can I drink alcohol while taking tadalafil?

Small amounts are not specifically prohibited, but substantial alcohol intake should be avoided. Larger amounts can add to tadalafil's blood-pressure-lowering effect and increase dizziness, headache or fainting risk.

Does food affect Efil 2.5 mg?

No significant food effect is expected. Tadalafil can be taken with or without food.

What symptoms need urgent medical attention?

Seek urgent help for an erection lasting 4 hours or longer, sudden vision loss, sudden hearing loss, severe chest pain, fainting or a serious allergic reaction.
