Medicine overview

ED Save 5 mg Tablet contains tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It is used in adult men for erectile dysfunction and may also be prescribed for urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. For erectile dysfunction, tadalafil increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, helping an erection develop and be maintained. The 5 mg strength is an oral tablet and should be used according to the regimen prescribed by a healthcare professional.

What it is used for

Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction, where a man has difficulty getting or maintaining an erection suitable for sexual activity. It is also approved for the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, such as urinary frequency, urgency, weak urine flow, or difficulty starting urination. Tadalafil does not cure erectile dysfunction, increase sexual desire, or protect against sexually transmitted infections.

How it works

Tadalafil blocks phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme involved in breaking down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). During sexual stimulation, increased cGMP helps relax smooth muscle and improve blood flow into the penis, supporting an erection. Sexual stimulation is still required for the erectile response. In BPH, tadalafil also relaxes smooth muscle within the prostate and bladder region, which can help reduce urinary symptoms.

How it is taken

Swallow tadalafil tablets by mouth with or without food. The appropriate schedule depends on the condition being treated and the prescribed regimen; tadalafil may be used once daily or, for erectile dysfunction, on an as-needed basis. When prescribed for once-daily use, it is generally taken at approximately the same time each day. Do not take extra doses or change the prescribed schedule without medical advice. Sexual stimulation is required for tadalafil to help produce an erection.

Important warnings

Do not use tadalafil with nitrates such as nitroglycerin or isosorbide medicines because the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. It is also contraindicated with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat. Tell the prescriber about alpha-blockers, blood-pressure medicines, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole or ritonavir, kidney or liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. Tadalafil should not be combined with other PDE5 inhibitors or erectile-dysfunction medicines unless specifically directed by a clinician. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain during sexual activity, an erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden loss of vision, or sudden decrease or loss of hearing.

Side effects and monitoring

Common effects with tadalafil 5 mg once daily include headache, indigestion, back pain, flushing, muscle aches, nasal congestion, diarrhea, and upper-respiratory or nasopharyngeal symptoms. Less common but potentially serious effects include severe allergic reactions, marked low blood pressure, priapism, sudden vision loss associated with NAION, and sudden hearing loss. Seek emergency care for an erection lasting more than 4 hours, chest pain, severe allergic symptoms, or sudden vision or hearing changes. Routine laboratory monitoring is not generally specified for otherwise appropriate users, but kidney, liver, cardiovascular status, and interacting medicines may require clinical review.

Pregnancy

Tadalafil tablets for erectile dysfunction/BPH are not indicated for use in females. There are insufficient human pregnancy data to establish a drug-associated risk for developmental outcomes.

Breastfeeding

Tadalafil tablets for erectile dysfunction/BPH are not indicated for use in females. It is not known whether tadalafil or its metabolites are present in human breast milk or what effects they may have on a breastfed child or milk production.

Food, drink and interactions

Avoid substantial alcohol consumption while taking tadalafil. Both alcohol and tadalafil can widen blood vessels, and consuming large amounts of alcohol may increase dizziness, headache, increased heart rate, and a fall in standing blood pressure.

Food and drink

Tadalafil tablets may be taken with or without food. Food does not require a specific timing adjustment. Substantial alcohol intake should be avoided because it can increase blood-pressure-lowering effects and dizziness.
