Medicine overview
Bactrim DS is a prescription combination antibacterial tablet containing sulfamethoxazole 800 mg and trimethoprim 160 mg.
What it is used for
Used for specific susceptible bacterial infections and certain opportunistic infections. It does not treat viral infections.
How it works
The two medicines block sequential steps in bacterial folate synthesis, producing a combined antibacterial effect.
How it is taken
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the directed course unless a clinician tells you to stop. Maintain adequate fluid intake unless medically restricted.
Important warnings
Serious skin reactions, blood disorders, high potassium, kidney injury and severe allergy can occur. Avoid with known sulfonamide or trimethoprim allergy and review major interactions, including warfarin and some potassium-raising medicines.
Side effects and monitoring
Common effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and rash. Stop and seek urgent care for blistering rash, breathing difficulty, jaundice, unusual bleeding or severe diarrhea.
Pregnancy
Can harm the fetus and interfere with folate metabolism; use during pregnancy only when the prescriber determines it is necessary. Avoid near term unless specifically directed.
Breastfeeding
Passes into breast milk; specialist advice is required, particularly for premature, jaundiced, ill or G6PD-deficient infants.
Food, drink and interactions
Avoid or limit alcohol because it may worsen nausea, dizziness and dehydration.
Food and drink
May be taken with food if stomach upset occurs; drink adequate water unless restricted.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature, protect from light and moisture, and keep tightly closed.
Frequently asked questions
Does Bactrim DS treat colds or flu?
No. It is an antibacterial medicine and does not treat viral infections.
Should the course be completed?
Take it for the full prescribed duration unless your clinician tells you to stop or a serious reaction occurs.
