Acivir Cream is a topical antiviral medicine containing aciclovir 5% w/w. It is used for recurrent herpes labialis, commonly called cold sores, in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older. Aciclovir is a nucleoside analogue antiviral that acts against herpes simplex virus. The cream works locally at the affected external areas of the lips and face to limit viral replication. What it is used for
Acivir Cream is indicated for recurrent herpes labialis, or cold sores, caused by herpes simplex virus. It is intended for use on affected external areas of the lips and face in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older. Treatment is most useful when started early, during warning symptoms such as tingling, itching or redness, or when the lesion first appears.
How it works
Aciclovir becomes activated mainly inside herpes-virus-infected cells. Its active form interferes with viral DNA polymerase, an enzyme the virus needs to copy its genetic material. This interrupts formation of new viral DNA and limits further viral replication. Because the medicine acts against viral multiplication, it can help control a cold-sore episode, but it does not remove dormant herpes simplex virus from the body or provide a permanent cure.
How it is taken
Acivir Cream is for cutaneous use only. The manufacturer recommends applying it to the affected external area 5 times per day for 4 days, beginning as early as possible when cold-sore symptoms start or when lesions appear. Wash your hands before and after application. Keep the cream away from the eyes and from inside the mouth, nose or vagina. Follow the prescribed or labelled directions and do not use it on other areas unless instructed by a healthcare professional.
Important warnings
Do not use Acivir Cream if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir or another ingredient in the formulation. It is intended only for external cold sores on the lips and face and should not be applied in the eyes or inside the mouth, nose or vagina. Local irritation or contact sensitisation can occur. Its effectiveness has not been established in immunocompromised patients. Seek urgent medical attention for symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including facial or throat swelling, widespread hives or difficulty breathing.
Side effects and monitoring
Common or local effects can include temporary burning or stinging, dryness, flaking, itching, redness or irritation at the application site. Less common or serious reactions include contact dermatitis, eczema and hypersensitivity reactions; angioedema and anaphylaxis have been reported. Stop using the cream and obtain prompt medical advice if a severe or spreading skin reaction develops. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing. Routine laboratory monitoring is not generally required for topical treatment.
Pregnancy
Systemic exposure to aciclovir after topical application is very low. The manufacturer's prescribing information states that use during pregnancy should be considered only when the potential benefit outweighs possible unknown risks. Breastfeeding
