Medicine overview

Acegaba 300 Capsule contains 300 mg of gabapentin in each hard gelatin capsule. It is an anticonvulsant medicine used for certain types of nerve pain and as additional treatment for partial-onset seizures. Gabapentin affects signalling within the nervous system, although its exact mechanism for relieving pain and controlling seizures is not fully understood. Acegaba 300 is an oral prescription medicine marketed by Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

What it is used for

Gabapentin capsules are used to manage postherpetic neuralgia, which is persistent nerve pain that can remain after shingles. They are also used alongside other antiseizure medicines for partial-onset seizures, including seizures that spread and become generalized. Other uses of gabapentin may vary by country and clinical circumstances and should not be assumed to be approved indications for this specific product.

How it works

Gabapentin binds to the alpha-2-delta (α2δ) subunit of voltage-activated calcium channels in the nervous system. It is structurally related to the neurotransmitter GABA, but it does not act directly on GABA receptors or alter GABA uptake or breakdown. The precise way this activity produces gabapentin's pain-relieving and antiseizure effects remains uncertain. Its effects on nervous-system signalling help reduce neuropathic pain and control certain seizures.

How it is taken

Take Acegaba 300 Capsule by mouth exactly as prescribed. Gabapentin capsules may be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole with water. Aluminum- and magnesium-containing antacids can reduce gabapentin absorption, so gabapentin should be taken at least 2 hours after these antacids. Do not abruptly stop gabapentin; rapid discontinuation can increase seizure risk and cause withdrawal symptoms. Dose adjustment may be required in people with reduced kidney function.

Important warnings

Do not use gabapentin if you have a known hypersensitivity to gabapentin or the product's ingredients. Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema and DRESS (a potentially severe reaction affecting multiple organs), can occur. Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or a severe rash with fever or swollen glands. Gabapentin can cause dizziness, sleepiness and impaired coordination, so avoid driving or hazardous activities until you know its effects. Antiepileptic medicines including gabapentin are associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior; new or worsening mood or behavioral changes require prompt medical attention. Serious respiratory depression can occur, particularly with opioids or other central nervous system depressants and in people with underlying breathing problems. Kidney impairment may require dose adjustment. Do not stop gabapentin abruptly.

Side effects and monitoring

Common effects include dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, poor coordination and peripheral edema (swelling, usually of the legs or feet). Nausea, vomiting, tremor, double vision and abnormal eye movements can also occur. Serious or less common reactions include severe allergic reactions, DRESS, suicidal thoughts or behavior, severe skin reactions and respiratory depression. Seek immediate medical attention for breathing difficulty, extreme sleepiness, facial or throat swelling, or other signs of a severe allergic reaction. Report significant new mood changes or thoughts of self-harm promptly. Patients with impaired kidney function and those taking opioids or other sedating medicines may require closer clinical monitoring.

Pregnancy

Available human observational data have not shown an increased risk of major birth defects or miscarriage, but the available studies have important limitations. Animal studies have demonstrated developmental toxicity. Extended use of gabapentin with opioids near delivery may increase the risk of neonatal withdrawal. Anyone who is pregnant or planning pregnancy should discuss gabapentin treatment with their healthcare professional rather than starting, stopping, or changing it independently.

Breastfeeding

Gabapentin passes into human breast milk. Its effects on a breastfed infant and on milk production are not fully established. The benefits of breastfeeding, the mother's clinical need for gabapentin, and potential effects on the infant should be considered with a healthcare professional.

Food, drink and interactions

Alcohol can increase the drowsiness and dizziness caused by gabapentin. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking gabapentin unless a healthcare professional has advised that it is appropriate.

Food and drink

Gabapentin capsules can be taken with or without food. Food has only a small effect on gabapentin absorption. Swallow the capsule whole with water. If using an antacid containing aluminum and magnesium, take gabapentin at least 2 hours after the antacid because these ingredients can reduce its absorption.

Storage

Store gabapentin capsules at controlled room temperature, 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), protected from excess heat and moisture. Keep the medicine tightly closed and out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Will gabapentin 300 mg make me sleepy?

It can. Drowsiness and dizziness are among the most common effects of gabapentin. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

Can I take Acegaba 300 with food?

Yes. Gabapentin capsules can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole with water.

Can I drink alcohol while taking gabapentin?

Alcohol can make gabapentin-related drowsiness and dizziness worse. Avoid alcohol unless your healthcare professional has advised that it is appropriate for you.

Can I suddenly stop taking gabapentin if I feel better?

No. Gabapentin should not be stopped abruptly because rapid discontinuation can increase seizure risk and may cause withdrawal symptoms. Any discontinuation should follow your prescriber's instructions.

Can I take an antacid with Acegaba 300?

Timing matters for antacids containing aluminum and magnesium. These products can reduce gabapentin absorption, so gabapentin should be taken at least 2 hours after the antacid.

Why am I feeling dizzy after taking gabapentin?

Dizziness is a common effect of gabapentin, particularly while your body is adjusting to treatment. Avoid activities that require full alertness until you know how the medicine affects you, and contact your healthcare professional if dizziness is persistent or troublesome.
