Abhigra 100 mg is an oral sildenafil citrate tablet used for erectile dysfunction. What it is used for
Abhigra 100 mg is used for erectile dysfunction, a condition in which a man has difficulty getting or maintaining an erection suitable for sexual activity. Sildenafil tablets at strengths including 100 mg are established for this indication. This product should not be treated as interchangeable with sildenafil formulations intended for pulmonary arterial hypertension or with combination erectile-dysfunction medicines.
How it works
Sildenafil inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme involved in breaking down cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP. During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide increases cGMP in erectile tissue. By slowing its breakdown, sildenafil supports relaxation of smooth muscle and increased blood flow into the penis. Sexual stimulation is still required because sildenafil enhances the normal erectile response rather than creating sexual arousal by itself.
How it is taken
Take sildenafil by mouth exactly as prescribed. General prescribing information states that it is usually taken about 1 hour before sexual activity and may be taken between 30 minutes and 4 hours beforehand. It can be taken with or without food, although a high-fat meal may delay its effect. Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction should not be taken more than once in a day.
Important warnings
Do not use sildenafil with nitrates or nitric-oxide donors, including medicines used for angina, because the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. It is also contraindicated with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat and in people with known hypersensitivity to sildenafil. Extra caution is required with alpha-blockers, blood-pressure medicines, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, significant cardiovascular disease, recent heart attack or stroke, very low blood pressure, serious liver or kidney problems, bleeding disorders, retinal disease, or conditions that increase the risk of priapism. Do not combine sildenafil with other PDE5 inhibitors or other sildenafil-containing treatments unless specifically directed by a prescriber. Seek urgent care for chest pain during sexual activity, an erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden loss of vision, or sudden decrease or loss of hearing.
Side effects and monitoring
Common effects include headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, dizziness, nausea, abnormal or blurred vision, back pain, muscle pain, and rash. Serious but less common events include prolonged erection or priapism, severe symptomatic low blood pressure, sudden vision loss associated with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), and sudden hearing decrease or loss. Obtain immediate medical help for an erection lasting more than 4 hours or severe cardiovascular symptoms, and promptly seek medical assessment for sudden visual or hearing changes. Routine laboratory monitoring is not generally specified for sildenafil used for erectile dysfunction; clinical review should focus on cardiovascular suitability, medicines that interact with sildenafil, and adverse effects.
Pregnancy
Abhigra 100 mg is intended for erectile dysfunction in men and is not indicated for use in women. Sildenafil erectile-dysfunction labeling therefore does not establish routine use during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction is not indicated for use in women. Limited data show that sildenafil and its active metabolite can be present in human milk, while effects on a breastfed child and on milk production are not established.
Food, drink and interactions
Avoid excessive alcohol when using sildenafil. Alcohol itself can make it more difficult to achieve an erection and may add to symptoms such as dizziness or light-headedness. A controlled study with sildenafil 50 mg did not show an additional hypotensive effect from a moderate experimental alcohol dose, but the 100 mg dose was not evaluated in that study.
Food and drink
Sildenafil may be taken with or without food. A high-fat meal slows its absorption and can delay the time before it starts working. NHS guidance also advises avoiding grapefruit and grapefruit juice because they can affect sildenafil exposure and may increase the chance of side effects.
