Medicine overview

Abatitor 250 Mg Tablet contains abiraterone acetate, an androgen biosynthesis inhibitor used in the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. Abiraterone reduces the production of androgens, hormones that can stimulate prostate cancer growth. Treatment is generally given with prednisone or another prescribed corticosteroid and alongside ongoing androgen-deprivation therapy unless the patient has previously had surgical removal of both testicles. The 250 mg product is an oral tablet and is a prescription medicine.

What it is used for

Abiraterone acetate is used with corticosteroid therapy for metastatic prostate cancer. Established indications include metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, where the cancer continues to progress despite treatments that lower androgen levels, and metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer. Patients generally continue treatment that suppresses testicular androgen production unless they have previously undergone bilateral orchiectomy.

How it works

Abiraterone acetate is converted in the body to abiraterone. It blocks CYP17, an enzyme involved in making androgens such as testosterone in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumour tissue. Lowering androgen production reduces hormonal stimulation of androgen-sensitive prostate cancer cells. Because CYP17 inhibition also changes other steroid hormones, corticosteroid treatment is normally given with abiraterone to help manage these hormonal effects.

How it is taken

Take abiraterone acetate exactly as prescribed as a single oral dose on an empty stomach. Do not eat for at least 2 hours before taking it or for at least 1 hour afterward because food can substantially increase absorption and the risk of adverse effects. Swallow the tablets whole with water; do not crush or chew them. Abiraterone is normally used with prescribed corticosteroid therapy. Do not alter or stop either medicine without instructions from the treating clinician.

Important warnings

Abiraterone can cause high blood pressure, low blood potassium, and fluid retention; these problems can be particularly important in people with cardiovascular disease or heart rhythm disorders. Blood pressure, potassium, and signs of fluid retention require regular monitoring. Serious liver injury, including rare acute liver failure, has been reported, so liver function must be checked before and during treatment. Adrenocortical insufficiency can occur, particularly if corticosteroid therapy is interrupted or during infection or physical stress. Severe hypoglycaemia has been reported in some patients with diabetes taking pioglitazone or repaglinide. Strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, rifabutin, and rifapentine can reduce abiraterone exposure and should generally be avoided. Abiraterone also inhibits CYP2D6 and CYP2C8 and may affect medicines metabolised through these pathways. Combined treatment with radium Ra 223 and abiraterone plus prednisone/prednisolone is not recommended because increased fractures and mortality have been observed. Seek prompt medical assessment for severe weakness, fainting, abnormal heartbeat, marked swelling, shortness of breath, or symptoms suggesting significant liver injury.

Side effects and monitoring

Common adverse effects include fatigue, joint pain, high blood pressure, nausea, swelling or fluid retention, low potassium, hot flushes, diarrhoea, vomiting, cough, headache, and upper respiratory infections. Important serious effects include severe hypokalaemia, abnormal heart rhythms, adrenocortical insufficiency, serious liver injury, and severe hypoglycaemia in susceptible patients. Monitoring includes blood pressure, serum potassium, and fluid retention at least monthly, with liver-function testing before treatment and regularly during therapy. Patients with diabetes may also require blood-glucose monitoring. Urgent medical assessment is appropriate for severe weakness, fainting, irregular heartbeat, breathing difficulty, rapidly worsening swelling, or symptoms of significant liver problems.

Pregnancy

Abiraterone acetate can cause fetal harm and is not indicated for use in women. Women who are pregnant or may be pregnant should not handle broken, crushed, or damaged abiraterone tablets without protective gloves. Male patients with female partners of reproductive potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for 3 weeks after the final dose.

Breastfeeding

The safety and effectiveness of abiraterone acetate have not been established in women. It is not known whether abiraterone is present in human milk or what effects it could have on a breastfed child or milk production.

Food and drink

Take abiraterone acetate on an empty stomach. Do not eat for at least 2 hours before taking the medicine or for at least 1 hour afterward. Food can markedly increase abiraterone exposure and may increase adverse effects. Swallow the tablets whole with water.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), with permitted excursions between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep out of reach of children. Pregnant women or women who may be pregnant should use protective gloves if handling broken, crushed, or damaged abiraterone tablets.

Frequently asked questions

Why does abiraterone have to be taken on an empty stomach?

Food can greatly increase the amount of abiraterone absorbed into the body, which may increase side effects. Take it at least 2 hours after food and do not eat for at least 1 hour after the dose.

Why is prednisone prescribed with abiraterone?

Abiraterone changes steroid-hormone production as it lowers androgens. The prescribed corticosteroid helps reduce complications related to these hormonal changes, including mineralocorticoid excess and adrenal insufficiency.

What monitoring is needed while taking abiraterone?

Blood pressure, potassium levels, and signs of fluid retention should be monitored at least monthly. Liver-function tests are also required before and during treatment, and some people with diabetes need additional blood-glucose monitoring.

Can abiraterone cause liver problems?

Yes. Abiraterone can cause significant liver injury, and rare severe or fatal cases have been reported. Liver blood tests are therefore checked regularly during treatment.

Can I crush Abatitor 250 Mg tablets if they are difficult to swallow?

No. Abiraterone tablets should be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed or chewed. Pregnant women or women who may be pregnant should also avoid handling broken or damaged tablets without protective gloves.

What should I do if I develop swelling or an irregular heartbeat while taking abiraterone?

Seek medical advice promptly. Abiraterone can cause fluid retention and low potassium, and these changes can contribute to potentially serious cardiovascular problems.

Can Cheap Generic Med ship Abatitor to the United States?

Cheap Generic Med serves the United States under its international shipping model. Prescription and personal-import requirements may apply, and shipping availability does not guarantee customs clearance or establish that import is lawful in an individual case.

Will an international Abatitor order have tracking?

Tracked international shipping is used under Cheap Generic Med's standard fulfilment model. A tracking number should be provided after dispatch, although it may take 24–72 hours for the carrier system to begin showing movement.
