Medicine overview

Glucolip 5 mg contains glimepiride, a prescription sulfonylurea for adults with type 2 diabetes.

What it is used for

Used with diet and exercise to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How it works

Glimepiride stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells and may improve peripheral response to insulin.

How it is taken

Take only as prescribed, generally with breakfast or the first main meal. The 5 mg strength should not be started or adjusted without clinical supervision.

Important warnings

Can cause severe hypoglycemia. Monitor glucose as directed and use extra caution with kidney or liver impairment, reduced food intake, illness or interacting medicines.

Side effects and monitoring

Common effects include hypoglycemia, dizziness, headache and nausea. Severe low blood sugar, seizure, fainting, serious rash or allergy requires urgent care.

Pregnancy

Use in pregnancy only under specialist direction; insulin is often preferred.

Breastfeeding

Discuss breastfeeding with a clinician because of potential infant hypoglycemia.

Food, drink and interactions

Alcohol can destabilize blood glucose and increase hypoglycemia risk.

Food and drink

Take with breakfast or the first main meal and do not skip meals.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, protected from moisture, and keep out of reach of children.
