Medicine overview

Accufine 5 mg is an oral isotretinoin medicine used for severe acne that has not responded adequately to other treatments. Isotretinoin belongs to the retinoid group, which consists of medicines related to vitamin A. It reduces processes that contribute to acne, particularly excessive oil production in the skin. Accufine is an isotretinoin brand marketed by Healing Pharma India Pvt Ltd; it should not be treated as the same branded product as Accutane, although both contain isotretinoin.

What it is used for

Accufine 5 mg is used to treat acne. Oral isotretinoin is principally reserved for severe or resistant acne, including severe nodular acne that has not improved sufficiently with conventional treatments such as systemic antibiotics. Because treatment requires careful safety monitoring, it should be used only under appropriate medical supervision.

How it works

Isotretinoin is a retinoid related to vitamin A. It acts on the sebaceous glands, reducing the amount of sebum, or skin oil, they produce and helping normalize processes involved in blocked pores and inflammation. Lower sebum production and reduced inflammation make the skin environment less favorable for the development of severe acne lesions.

How it is taken

Take Accufine 5 mg exactly as prescribed. The manufacturer advises swallowing the capsule whole with food; do not chew, crush, or break it. The strength of the capsule does not determine how often an individual should take it, so follow the prescribed treatment plan rather than changing the dose or frequency yourself.

Important warnings

Isotretinoin must not be used during pregnancy because exposure can cause severe fetal harm, including major birth defects and pregnancy loss. Do not use it if you have had a serious allergy to isotretinoin or its ingredients. Avoid vitamin A supplements and tetracycline antibiotics unless specifically cleared by the prescriber because important adverse effects can occur, including intracranial hypertension. Treatment can also affect mood and mental health, liver function, blood lipids, vision, hearing, the pancreas, bones and muscles, and the gastrointestinal system. Seek urgent medical attention for severe headache with visual symptoms, serious mood or behavioral changes, severe abdominal pain, jaundice, severe skin reactions, or sudden changes in vision or hearing. Do not donate blood during treatment or for one month after stopping isotretinoin.

Side effects and monitoring

Common effects include very dry or cracked lips, dry skin, dry eyes, nose dryness or nosebleeds, headache, joint or back discomfort, and skin irritation. Serious or less common problems include significant increases in triglycerides or liver enzymes, pancreatitis, severe skin reactions, intracranial hypertension, psychiatric symptoms, and changes in vision or hearing. Medical attention is needed promptly for severe headache with visual disturbance, marked mood or behavioral changes, severe abdominal pain, jaundice, severe rash, or sudden hearing or eyesight problems. Monitoring commonly includes liver-function tests and fasting lipid tests before treatment and periodically afterward; pregnancy testing is required for patients who can become pregnant according to the applicable prevention program.

Pregnancy

Do not use isotretinoin during pregnancy. It carries a very high risk of severe birth defects, miscarriage and other serious pregnancy outcomes. Patients who can become pregnant must follow the pregnancy-testing and contraception requirements specified by their prescriber and the applicable national pregnancy-prevention program before, during and after treatment. Breastfeeding

Do not breastfeed while taking isotretinoin. Current prescribing information advises against breastfeeding during treatment because of the potential for serious adverse effects in a nursing infant; current U.S. labeling also advises avoiding breastfeeding for at least 8 days after the last dose.

Food, drink and interactions

It is best to avoid alcohol while taking isotretinoin because the medicine can affect liver function and blood triglyceride levels, and alcohol may add to these risks.

Food and drink

Accufine 5 mg should be taken with food according to the manufacturer's product information. A normal diet can otherwise generally be continued unless the prescriber advises differently. Do not take vitamin A supplements while using isotretinoin because this may increase retinoid-related adverse effects.

Storage

Store below 30°C. Keep the medicine in its original packaging and out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 5 mg isotretinoin capsule still cause dry lips and dry eyes?

Yes. Dry or cracked lips, dry skin and dry eyes are well-recognized effects of isotretinoin and can occur even when a low-strength capsule is prescribed. The severity varies between patients.

How quickly should I expect Accufine 5 mg to improve my acne?

Improvement varies, and the 5 mg strength alone does not predict how quickly an individual will respond. Isotretinoin treatment is monitored over time, so follow-up with the prescriber is important rather than changing the dose if improvement seems slow.

Can acne look worse after starting isotretinoin?

It can. Some patients experience an initial worsening of acne during treatment. Contact the prescriber if the flare is severe, painful or concerning rather than adjusting treatment yourself.

Should I take Accufine 5 mg with a fatty meal?

Take Accufine with food as stated in the product information. There is no verified Accufine-specific requirement in the manufacturer's available information for a particular amount of dietary fat, so follow the supplied leaflet and prescriber's instructions.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Accufine?

It is best not to drink alcohol while taking isotretinoin. Both alcohol and isotretinoin can affect the liver, and isotretinoin can also increase triglycerides.

What blood tests may be needed while taking isotretinoin?

Liver-function tests and fasting lipid tests, including triglycerides, are commonly checked before treatment and periodically afterward. Pregnancy testing is also required for patients who can become pregnant under applicable pregnancy-prevention requirements.

Can I take doxycycline or a vitamin A supplement with Accufine?

These combinations should be avoided unless the prescriber specifically directs otherwise. Tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline can increase the risk of intracranial hypertension, while extra vitamin A may increase isotretinoin-related adverse effects.

Is Accufine 5 mg the same brand as Accutane?

No. Accufine is a separate isotretinoin product marketed by Healing Pharma India Pvt Ltd. Accutane is another brand name historically used for isotretinoin, so the brand names should not be treated as interchangeable product identities.
