Medicine overview

Viagra 100 mg is an oral medicine containing sildenafil citrate, equivalent to 100 mg sildenafil. It belongs to the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor class and is used to treat erectile dysfunction in adult men. Sildenafil supports the natural erectile response by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. The 100 mg Viagra tablet is a blue, film-coated, rounded-diamond-shaped tablet marked “VGR100” and “PFIZER.” Sexual stimulation is still required for the medicine to work.

What it is used for

Viagra is indicated for erectile dysfunction, a condition in which a man has difficulty getting or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity. It can improve erectile response when sexual stimulation occurs, but it does not cure the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction, increase sexual desire, prevent pregnancy, or protect against sexually transmitted infections.

How it works

Sildenafil inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide is released in erectile tissue and raises cGMP levels. By slowing cGMP breakdown, sildenafil helps smooth muscle in the corpus cavernosum relax and allows more blood to flow into the penis. This supports an erection in response to sexual stimulation; sildenafil does not produce the same erectile effect without sexual stimulation.

How it is taken

Viagra is taken by mouth as needed before sexual activity. The prescribing information states that it may be taken from 30 minutes to 4 hours before sexual activity and is commonly taken about 1 hour beforehand. It may be taken with or without food, although a high-fat meal can delay absorption and the onset of effect. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day. The appropriate strength should be determined by the prescriber; 100 mg is the maximum recommended dose.

Important warnings

Do not use Viagra with nitrates or nitric oxide donors, including medicines such as nitroglycerin, because the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. It is also contraindicated with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat and in people with known hypersensitivity to sildenafil or tablet ingredients. Sexual activity itself may carry cardiovascular risk for some people with heart disease, so Viagra should not be used when sexual activity is medically inadvisable. Sildenafil can further lower blood pressure when combined with alpha-blockers or antihypertensive medicines. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, including ritonavir, ketoconazole and itraconazole, can substantially increase sildenafil exposure. Combining Viagra with other PDE5 inhibitors, other sildenafil-containing medicines, or other erectile dysfunction treatments is not recommended. Seek urgent medical attention for an erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden loss or marked decrease of vision, sudden hearing loss, or serious allergic symptoms.

Side effects and monitoring

Common adverse effects include headache, flushing, indigestion, abnormal or altered vision, nasal congestion, back pain, muscle pain, nausea, dizziness and rash. Some adverse effects occur more frequently at higher doses. Serious or less common concerns include prolonged erection or priapism, sudden vision loss associated with reported cases of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), sudden decrease or loss of hearing, symptomatic low blood pressure, severe allergic reactions and cardiovascular events. Obtain emergency care for an erection lasting longer than 4 hours. Stop taking the medicine and seek prompt medical attention for sudden vision or hearing loss. No routine laboratory monitoring is specified for uncomplicated use, but cardiovascular status, interacting medicines and relevant underlying conditions should be considered clinically.

Pregnancy

Viagra is not indicated for use in females. There are no adequate data from Viagra use in pregnant women to establish drug-associated developmental risks. Animal studies cited in the prescribing information did not show adverse developmental outcomes at the studied exposures.

Breastfeeding

Viagra is not indicated for use in females. Limited human data show that sildenafil and its active metabolite can be present in breast milk, but there is insufficient information about effects on a breastfed child or on milk production.

Food, drink and interactions

A study using sildenafil 50 mg with alcohol did not show potentiation of alcohol's blood-pressure-lowering effect in healthy volunteers. However, the maximum 100 mg dose was not evaluated in that study. Because both alcohol and sildenafil may contribute to symptoms such as dizziness and alcohol itself can worsen erectile function, patients should discuss alcohol use with their healthcare professional.

Food and drink

Viagra may be taken with or without food. A high-fat meal can delay sildenafil absorption and may make it take longer to start working. Patients should discuss grapefruit or grapefruit juice with their healthcare professional because grapefruit can affect medicines metabolized through CYP3A pathways.

Storage

Store Viagra at 25°C (77°F), with permitted excursions between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F), consistent with USP controlled room temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Does Viagra work without sexual stimulation?

No. Sildenafil supports the normal erectile response to sexual stimulation; it does not produce the intended erectile effect in the absence of sexual stimulation.

How long before sex should I take Viagra?

Viagra may be taken 30 minutes to 4 hours before sexual activity and is commonly taken about 1 hour beforehand. Follow the instructions provided by your prescriber.

Does eating before Viagra make it work more slowly?

It can. Viagra can be taken with or without food, but a high-fat meal may delay absorption and make the medicine take longer to start working.

Can I take Viagra more than once in a day if the first tablet does not work?

No. The prescribing information states that the maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day. Do not take an additional dose or change your prescribed dose without medical guidance.

What should I do if an erection lasts more than 4 hours?

Get emergency medical attention. A prolonged erection can develop into priapism and may damage penile tissue if it is not treated promptly.

Can I use Viagra if I take nitroglycerin for chest pain?

No. Viagra must not be combined with nitrates such as nitroglycerin because the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Does Viagra permanently cure erectile dysfunction?

No. Sildenafil helps erectile function while the medicine is active and sexual stimulation occurs, but it does not cure the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction.

Can Cheap Generic Med ship Viagra to the United States?

Cheap Generic Med serves the United States under its international shipping model. Delivery is typically estimated at 10–14 business days after dispatch, but customs or carrier delays may extend transit; prescription and personal-import requirements may also apply.

Will my Viagra order have tracking?

Under Cheap Generic Med's standard fulfilment model, tracked international shipping is used and a tracking number should be provided after dispatch. Carrier systems may take 24–72 hours to begin showing movement.
